BC Cue Sports - 55 plus 70 plus Senior Singles Tournament
March 06, 2010 High-Break Billiards Richmond, B.C.

There was an attendance of 7 players in 55 plus and 6 players over 70 participating in these two events. Welcome back Norval Rose, John Sheehy and new members Frank Yeung and Bob Donaldson.
The format was to have a final with the last four players in each category. In the over 70 crowd, we had John Sheehy and Leo Van de Boogard both with 4 wins and one loss while third was John Beckett with 3 wins and 2 losses with the trailer Dianne McGrath with 2 wins and 4 losses. The two John's played off, guaranteeing a John win, who was John Beckett. Leo had beaten Dianne earlier but lost to her in their playoff game. John had difficulty with Dianne in their first match as well as the second and Dianne ended up the winner. That's a first in our league, with a female winner. Dianne has taken lessons from the pros, now maybe she can give them.
In the second group of 55 plus we had Dalton Roy on top with 5 wins and one loss, with Mal Hanczik and Ken Potocky both with 4 wins and 2 losses. Gary Wallace squeeked in past John Ranta with 3 wins 3 losses as he beat John earlier. No Johns in this playoff.
Dalton played off against Gary and advanced against the winner between Mal and Ken. This was a close one as Ken fowled and left the green in a difficult position and Mal asked Ken to take the shot. Ken ran out with one point to spare. He wasn't so lucky against Dalton in the fianal two our of three, as Dalton trashed him in two games staight. Good playing all.

BC Cue Sports - Century Doubles Snooker Tournament

Saturday, January 30, at Terminal City Club

A good turnout for the Century Doubles, at the Terminal City Club. 24 players participated to make up two groups of six pairs. There was a number of singles that showed up and they quickly paired off for the event. Ken Potocky was fortunate to find Bryan Coulter as a partner. Dal Gachalan played with a past second place finisher Dianne McGrath. That was a first for BC Cue Sports, to have a woman place in the money. We welcomed a new player Gary Spence, who partnered with Mal Hanczik.
There was a three way tie in Group "A" with Bryan Coulter and Ken Potocky playing off against Leo Van Den Boogard and Leo Jr. They had lost to them earlier but beat them to play off against Ping Li and Ron Lee who had the bye. It was a very close game with all to be had in the last 4 balls. Ron Lee had the game in hand when he played the pink and left the shooter touching the black, however that gave new life to Bryan and Ken who then won that set. They then moved on to play Ted Wormworth and Reed Unger in sudden death and won.
In Group "B', Dalton Roy and John Ranta played against John Starcevic and Jim Masterman. John and Jim won and went on to play the best two out of three against Bryan and Ken, in the final. Bryan and Ken won the first and the second ended in a tie with Jim running off the colours. Jim and John won the second with the black play off. With time running out the four decided leave it as a tie and split the proceeds.
We then found out that the third place was also declared a tie so Dalton, John, Ted and Reed split their share of the pot. Thank God, John won some money, or we would have heard about the long trip down from Cash Creek. The next time we should donate a sandwich for his trip back. Thanks for coming John.
Bob Pomeroy won the 50/50. I believe he found a pub close by where he was able to share in his good fortune.

BC Cue Sports - 55 + and 70+ Snooker Tournament
Saturday, January 9, at High-Break Billiards,

2010's first tournamet had seven gentlemen over 55 and Del Gachallan, who was the lone 70 plus entrant. He joined in the event with a modified handicap to offset the dissadvantage he was faced with.
The contest involved two groups of four players playing two sets against each other in their respective groups. One point for a split and two for the outright win of 2 sets. The winner of each group advanced to play off in the final two out of three. The contest between the players was very fair as the handicaps were very similar, exept for Del's
There was a tie between Jim Mastermind and John Ranta in Group B ,who then played off in a sudden death to see who would advance against Reid Unger the winner of Group A. John prevailed over Jim who gave him a run for his money.
Reid Unger looked like a formidable apponent with runs over 40 in some of his matches. He totally over ran most of his opponents.
John Ranta is always ready to pack up and leave but always finds himself in the hunt, somehow and today he remained to play in the final. Luck or charm, or both I'm not sure.
The final ended in two games as Reid lost his stroke in the games against John. Big Bad John wins once again. I hope the win offset the gas he spent coming from Cash Creek, where ever that is. John bring us a map next time,so we know where to find you.
